Good coffee doesn’t just happen.
Every cup has travelled further than we often stop to think about. From the people who grow it to those who roast, brew and serve it, coffee is shaped by countless decisions along the way.
This International Coffee Day, we’re taking a moment to recognise the people, places and craft behind every cup.
It starts at origin.
Long before coffee reaches a roastery or café, it begins with the people who grow it.
Coffee is an agricultural product, shaped by its environment, variety and the decisions made throughout its production. From nurturing the crop and harvesting ripe coffee cherries to choosing how the coffee is processed and prepared, each stage can influence what we eventually experience in the cup.
For us, understanding where a coffee comes from is part of understanding the coffee itself.
Once green coffee reaches the roastery, another part of the journey begins.
Roasting isn't about creating flavour from nothing. It's about understanding the potential already within a coffee and finding the best way to bring it forward.
That means tasting, evaluating and refining. Cupping allows us to explore a coffee's sweetness, acidity, body and flavour, helping inform the decisions we make at the roastery.
After more than 30 years of roasting at Danes, that curiosity hasn't gone anywhere. There's always another coffee to understand, another variable to explore and something more to learn.
The people and places that bring it to life.
The journey continues with the cafés, baristas and hospitality professionals who turn all that work into the coffee you know and love.
Dialling in an espresso. Understanding the coffee they're serving. Pouring the flat white you pick up every morning. Creating a place people want to return to.
These things matter.
Cafés are also where so many of us begin exploring coffee. So ask your barista what's in the grinder. Try something different. Find your local café and get curious about what's in your cup.
Until it reaches you.
Ultimately, coffee is there to be enjoyed.
You don't need to know every processing method, variety or brewing variable to appreciate good coffee. Whether you're learning how to choose coffee beans for home espressoor simply trying something different at your local café, understanding a little more about what goes into your cup can make discovering what you enjoy even better.
That's the beauty of coffee. There's always somewhere else to go with it.
